Longwall mining is a deep mining technique capable of fully extracting huge panels of coal, frequently up to 1,500 feet wide and two miles long. Coal shearing machines known as “continuous miners,” remove a long wall of coal in a single slice as hydraulic jacks hold up the roof above and in front of the machine.

Jul 09, 2007 Longwall mining is one of the most commonly used methods in underground mining. In this paper, a theoretical method for prediction of ground settlement induced by coal mining is presented. Effects of parameters such as length of longwall, angle of draw and extracted seam height have been evaluated. The results indicate an increase of subsidence ...
This paper describes geotechnical influences upon the planning, development and implementation of the longwall mining system. The effects of these factors have been assessed from a series of comprehensive investigations carried out in the South Wales and South Nottinghamshire Coalfields. All the investigations involved the setting up of monitoring sites employing specially designed ...

Mining Publication: Water Infusion - An Effective and Economical Longwall Dust Control. In Europe, water infusion is used widely to reduce generation of respirable dust during mining. Its use in the United States is limited to a few plow operations in the Pocahontas No. 3 Coalbed. This Bureau of Mines report describes the technology for ...
Mining Publication: Timing and Duration of Subsidence Due to Longwall Mining. Subsidence data gathered by the U.S. Bureau of Mines over a series of longwall panels in the Pittsburgh Coalbed were studied to obtain insight as to the role of time in the subsidence process. It was found that subsidence began essentially with undermining and was ...
Average longwall pass methane emission rates for 229-m (750-ft) wide faces were 61 % (0.072 m3/sec (153 cfm)) higher at the VP-3 Mine than at the VP-1 Mine. It was predicted by regression analysis of methane emissions data from 229-m (750-ft) wide faces that extending faces to 305 m (1,000 ft) would increase methane emission rates by only 7% ...
Apr 08, 2010 Modern longwall mining was introduced to the U.S. in the 1950s, and now more than 100 such mines, mostly in central Appalachia, produce the lion's share of underground coal.
LONGWALL MINING Overview. In the method of secondary extraction known as longwall mining a relatively long mining face (typically in the range 100 to 300m but may be longer) is created by driving a roadway at right angles between two roadways that form the sides of the longwall block, with one rib of this new roadway forming the longwall face.
Jan 16, 2021 The CCC report, according to the news release, uses DEP data to show that since Act 54 was enacted more than a quarter-century ago, longwall mines have been overwhelmingly responsible for damages incurred by underground coal mining. It also says, among other things, that 1,726 water supplies have been damaged (67% due to longwall mining).

Feb 05, 2019 Email. Subsidence from longwall mining underneath Interstate 70 near West Alexander led to some long traffic backups Tuesday, as traffic had to be temporarily halted to mill down ripples that had formed in the highway. As of 3 p.m., crews were still working to mill the roadway. Traffic was moving in the eastbound lanes, but the westbound lanes ...
Mining Publication: Behavior of Simulated Longwall Gob Material. This report presents results of a U.S. Bureau of Mines study of longwall gob material. The objective of this work was to determine material stiffness properties of the gob for use in numerical models of rock mass response to longwall mining. Photographs of actual mine gob were ...
Longwall mining is a highly productive underground coal mining technique. Longwall mining machines consist of multiple coal shearers mounted on a series of self-advancing hydraulic ceiling supports. The entire process is mechanized. Longwall mining machines are about 800 feet (240 meters) in width and 5 to 10 feet (1.5 to 3 meters) tall.
Longwall mining requires a great deal of in-depth, upfront training for operators and service personnel. Longwall mining systems are complex, and in order to operate them safely and productively, operators need hands-on experience. However, the full system is not always available or operational when operators need to be trained.

Apr 07, 2020 Community opposition to longwall mining under water catchments has been a feature of politics in this state for many years. Parliament was due to debate a 10,000-strong petition, organised by the Sutherland Shire Environment Centre, against Peabody Energy’s expansion plans.
Jun 21, 2021 Coal companies describe longwall mining as “planned subsistence,” but community activists describe it as “planned destruction.” MONTGOMERY COUNTY, IL -- The Kaskaskia Group of Sierra Club Illinois will host a panel discussion, “The Toll from Longwall Mining” on Monday, June 21 at 6:30pm. The panel is part of a speaker series that aims to educate the public on the environmental
In coal mining: Longwall mining. In the longwall mining method, mine development is carried out in such a manner that large blocks of coal, usually 100 to 300 metres wide and 1,000 to 3,000 metres long, are available for complete extraction (see photograph ). A block of coal….

Longwall Mining. Longwall mining is a form of underground coal mining that allows industry to mine massive blocks of coal more efficiently and with fewer miners than previous mining methods. Once done with pick and shovel and mules, underground coal mining progressed to using machines that could extract more coal at a faster rate of production.
